AeroNet
The Supervisory System

The AeroNet MSS provides distributed mechanisms for the monitoring, the configuration, the statistics collection and the maintenance of the MSS Center; roughly speaking, on every hardware unit composing AeroNet MSS (Servers, Central System, Workstations) a Supervisory System module resides, responsible for the management of the local resources (both software modules running on the machine and local hardware components).

In addition to the distributed modules, a coordination module, for supervisory goals, is present on the Central System, which communicates with the various distributed Supervisory modules, sending them commands and requests, and receiving answers and spontaneous information.
This coordination unit has in charge the responsibility of the dialogue with the user interface running on the Supervisor Workstation;

this Workstation is the only way, for human operators, to interact with the Supervisory System.

The distributed Supervisory units have in charge the following activities:

  • at system start up, they perform check procedures to verify correctness of the hardware and software resources, they start the processes that shall be active on the machine, providing the configuration parameters and controlling the correct start up
  • at any time, they control the configuration parameters of each module, communicating to the coordination module on the Central System the possible run-time changes, occurred as a consequence of a Center's status change or upon the request of the Center Supervisor
  • they continuously monitor the status of all Center components, thus periodically polling all machines to verify their behavior, receiving and storing alarms and anomalies notices coming from the controlled modules, performing recovery action whenever it is possible and notifying he critical situations to the coordination unit, in order to be displayed to the personnel
  • they collect statistics coming from the controlled modules, elaborate these statistics and send them to the coordination unit.
The coordination unit collects all indications coming from the distributed Supervisory modules and communicates them to the Supervisor Workstation user interface: in the same way, it receives commands coming from the Center Supervisor through the Workstation User interface, and sends them to the distributed Supervisory modules, thus acting as a Dispatcher.
